A recent Newsletter from Simply Naturals – WELL worth a read!
We’ve all read about electrolytes and how they are essential for maintaining optimum health especially for those who lead a more active & sporting lifestyle (particularly at this time of year); but did you know that the term ‘electrolyte’ merely refers to ‘minerals in the body?’
Let’s just look at the term ‘electrolyte’ for a few minutes and as you read further ‘the penny will drop’ as to why we continue to receive outstanding testimonials about our Sizzling Minerals, with many coming from sports people.
Electrolytes are minerals in the body that have an electrical charge. They are present in our blood, tissues, urine and other body fluids.
Electrolytes are important because they help:
- Balance the amount of water in our body
- Balance the body’s acid/base (pH) level
- Move nutrients into our cells
- Move wastes out of our cells
- Make sure that our nerves, muscles, the heart and the brain function correctly
Sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphorus, and magnesium are all electrolytes. We get them from the foods we eat and (hopefully) in the fluids we drink, but in many cases, we do need to supplement.
The levels of electrolytes in our bodies can become too low or too high, which can happen when the amount of water in our body changes. The amount of water that we take in should equal the amount we lose and if something upsets this balance, we may have too little water (dehydration) or too much water (overhydration). Some medicines, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, and liver or kidney problems can all upset our water balance and therefore electrolyte (mineral) balance.
Electrolytes are important because they are what our cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. Our kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in our blood constant despite changes in the body.
For example, when we are physically working hard or exercising heavily, we lose electrolytes in our sweat, particularly sodium and potassium. These electrolytes must be replaced to keep the electrolyte concentrations of our body fluids constant. So, this is why we find many sports drinks with sodium chloride or potassium chloride added to them – but be warned sodium chloride (table salt) & potassium chloride are both ‘metallic’ minerals and although they will provide a slight benefit they are not truly bioavailable, ‘food state’ minerals.
We continue to receive many positive testimonials but in recent months we have seen an uplift especially from the growing number of people pursuing outdoor sports i.e. cycling) as those who exercise hard, while the weather is warm will lose significantly more ‘electrolytes’ than at any other time; just drinking water can actually add to the problem, because as people continue to exercise they will continue to excrete electrolytes in their sweat, and drinking more water can add to this problem!
Our experience has clearly shown that dropping a Sizzling Mineral tablet in your water bottle and drinking over the course of your exercise regime will delivery significant benefits – especially for those in the sporting world!
It’s also reassuring to hear how people perform so much better once hydrated with electrolytes, having consumed Sizzling Minerals!
